Smitingen
Smitingen is one of the most popular destinations on the High Coast, with over 100,000 visitors during the summer season. Not only does it have one of Norrland's finest beaches, but also beautiful and dramatic nature with caves, hiking trails and activities all year round.
The sandy beach
Smitingen is located in a wide bay and offers a large and fine sandy beach with shallow bathing. If you prefer rocks, you will find smooth, fine rocks further out on the left side of the bay. On fine summer days, Smitingen is like a large living room for both Härnösand residents and visitors.
Hiking
Around Smitingen you can do several short hikes. On the northern side, you can walk around Klubbsjön or take Grottstigen around Klubberget. You can also follow the trail to the top of Klubberget, 80 meters above sea level.
South of Smitingen you will find the Geology Trails, one shorter and one longer. They pass beautifully turned and strangely shaped rauks, pebble fields, lots of small pots and polished pits. For the little ones, there is Allemansråttan, a short discovery trail on the theme of the right of public access.
If you want to do a longer hike, both the Härnö Trail and the more challenging Härnö Trail pass by Smitingen. Along them you can walk to Vårdkasen (and back), for example. The distance one way is about six kilometers, but the nature is hilly and demanding, so it's quite a hike. On the other hand, the reward is fantastic views and nature experiences.
Caves
In the Smitingen area there are no less than five large and beautifully carved tunnel caves. The unique collection of caves, pots and rauks at Smitingen is among the most beautiful of its kind in Sweden.
The cave trail leads to the caves on the outside of Härnöklubb. It divides into two cave areas. In the southern one there are two very large caves, where a bit of climbing is required to reach the lower double cave and the cave in the water. In the northern cave area, the path goes down to the more beautiful of two large caves at the water's edge.
On the cave map you can read more about the caves at Smitingen and find other caves in Härnösand.
Viewing points
There are many great viewpoints in the area around Smitingen. Actually, you can just go up any peak nearby. But two of the best places are Klubberget and Örsjöberget.
Activities on the beach
The beach has one of the best facilities for beach volleyball in Sweden. There are eight beach volleyball courts in total, as well as a beach handball court. There are also barbecue areas and play equipment, including a climbing pyramid.
Surf
During fall and winter, Smitingen is a surfer's paradise. Surfers from Sweden, Norway and other countries flock here when the storms drive up meter-high waves in Smitingen Bay.
Klubbsjön
Klubbsjön is one of Sweden's most seaside lakes. The lake is close to the sea bath and offers bathing rocks, barbecue areas and beautiful nature. The walking path around the lake is well trodden and the path from the sea bath to the lake is adapted so that even those who need a walker or wheelchair can get all the way to a barbecue area by the lake where there is also a toilet. Klubbsjön is a popular swimming spot, especially when the sea is cold.
Smitingen Härnöklubb nature reserve
Smitingen/Härnöklubb is both a nature reserve and a Natura 2000 site. The aim is to preserve the area's landforms, caves and various habitats. You can read more about the nature reserve on the county administrative board's website.
Barbecue
There are barbecue areas at the beach, at Klubbsjön and at several other places in the area. You can find all barbecue areas on the outdoor map
Eating and coffee
There is a restaurant on the beach that offers coffee and light meals in summer.
Camping
A brand new year-round campsite will be built at Smitingen. The campsite will be located right next to the beach, just a few hundred meters from the water.
The French camping company Huttopia will build the campsite. Huttopia's basic idea is to offer a natural yet comfortable experience in specially designed cabins or tents made of natural materials, known as glamping, as well as regular tent sites. Huttopia specializes in sustainable campsites embedded in scenic areas.
PLEASE NOTE. The pop-up campsite is closed
The small temporary pop-up campsite that has existed at Smitingen in recent years is now closed as the entire area is to be rebuilt. In summer 2026, all campers are welcome back - and there will be plenty of room!
