Camp site at Smitingen
A brand new campsite will be built at Smitingen. The campsite will be located right next to the beach, just a few hundred meters from the water. The French company Huttopia will build and operate a campsite with a focus on nature and sustainability.
The project
The French company Huttopia will build and operate a year-round open-air campsite on about five hectares. The exact design has not been finalized, but the company's basic idea is to offer a natural yet comfortable experience in specially designed cabins or tents made of natural materials, known as glamping, as well as regular campsites. Huttopia specializes in sustainable campsites nestled in scenic areas.

The area
Smitingen is one of Norrland's finest and most popular beaches. The beach has barbecue areas, a number of beach volleyball courts and a beach handball court. Smitingen is also a popular place for surfers during the fall and winter months.
Adjacent to the sea bath is a summer cottage area with 45 holiday homes.
Nature areas
Smitingen/Härnöklubb is a nature reserve and Natura 2000 area. The area has beautiful and dramatic scenery with caves and other geological formations such as rauks, boulders and shingle fields.
It is also home to Klubbsjön, one of Sweden's most seaside lakes, which often has high bathing temperatures. The path to Klubbsjön is adapted so that the area is accessible to everyone.
PLEASE NOTE. The pop-up campsite is closed
The small temporary pop-up campsite that has existed at Smitingen in recent years is now closed as the entire area is to be rebuilt. In summer 2026, all campers are welcome back - and there will be plenty of room!
Spring 2024
The old restaurant building is demolished and construction of a new one begins.
December 2023
Huttopia receives planning permission for a new restaurant building on the beach with a restaurant, conference room and changing rooms for the public.

September 2023
The French company Huttopia wins the tender when the municipal council decides to award the service concession to the company. The contract is signed for 35 years.
January 2023
Härnösand municipality is looking for an entrepreneur who wants to build and operate a campsite at Smitingen through a so-called service concession agreement.
Autumn 2022
Härnösand municipality buys the restaurant building on the beach + a land area adjacent to the campsite where, among other things, a water and sewage system will be built for the campsite.
November 2021

December 2020
A feasibility study is starting to develop the technical conditions for sustainable tourism and design of a campsite in the area. The feasibility study will lay the foundation for an implementation project.
