Seminariet
The National Courts Administration will move to Seminariet. The old school building will be rebuilt and extended to become a modern and secure court building. Construction will start in 2024 and occupancy is expected in March 2026.
The project
The Court of Justice will move to the part of the site where the old buildings are located (marked in blue on the map). There, a modern and secure court building will be created by rebuilding the existing school building and connecting it to a new building.
The two buildings, built in the 1940s, connecting the oldest school building (facing the street) with the gymnasium building (facing the courtyard) will be demolished.
The property is within the national interest for cultural heritage protection. This places high demands on design.
The area
Seminariet is very centrally located, only about 600 meters from the main square. Nearby are preschools, schools and sports facilities. A stone's throw away is Stadsparken and Sambiblioteket, which leads the way into the center. The area has good public transport links and bus stops nearby. There are also walking and cycling routes around the area. Seminariet borders an older leafy neighborhood that largely consists of larger two-story villas built in the early 1900s.
Adjacent to the buildings there is also a large grassy area and a graveled open parking lot.
History of Seminariet
Seminariet was completed in the autumn of 1907, built for the folk school seminary, which had existed in Härnösand in other places since 1848. The architect was Gustaf Hermansson, who also designed some 30 buildings in Sundsvall and Sofia Church in Stockholm.
In 1908, Seminariet received its first telephone and in 1913 electric light was installed.
During the Second World War, education was dormant. When education started up again after 1945, there was a sharp increase in pupils and teachers and the premises on Kastellgatan became too small. Therefore, an angular building was built that linked the school building with the gymnasium. The extension facing Kastellgatan was built on three floors, with the training school on the ground floor. The corner building facing the gymnasium had a dining room and kitchen.
The old seminary building had an auditorium on the top floor, where the rector Vendela Wester-Wåhlström chose to decorate the long wall with a painting. In the summer of 1949, Mollie Faustman was commissioned to create a fresco that is still in the auditorium today.
Education in Seminariets premises has changed over the decades and ceased in 2009.
Since then, the premises have been empty except for a few years when the independent primary school Kastellskolan had its activities on the premises.
