The National Archives

Härnösand has long been the archive capital of Norrland. A capital that is now growing as the National Archives builds northern Europe's largest archive, a modern and climate-smart archive on Saltvikshöjden. The National Archives will relocate its existing operations in Härnösand to this site, and the Swedish Tax Agency will gather all its archives, which are currently scattered around the country.

The project

The new archive at Saltvikshöjden in Härnösand will cover 33,000 square meters. The archive is being built in collaboration between the National Archives and the Swedish Tax Agency by the state-owned real estate company Specialfastigheter.

The new archive will house both the National Archives' existing operations and the Swedish Tax Agency's new central and national archives.

The building will be built in two parts, the rear archive section in concrete and the front office and visitor section in wood. There is also the possibility of expanding the archive section to almost double its size in the future.

It will be climate-smart premises of the highest sustainability class, "Miljöbyggnad Guld", where the two authorities can receive and store archive documents in a good way, but also make them available to the public in a modern way.

The archive is situated in the rear part while public areas for visitors and offices are situated in the front part.

The public area is large and airy.

  • Shelf meters: 258 000 meters
  • Temperature in the archive: 18 degrees
