Excursions
Smitingen is one of the High Coast's most popular destinations with one of Norrland's finest beaches, beautiful and dramatic nature with caves, hiking trails and activities all year round.
Hemsön has lovely rocky beaches, unspoiled marshes and woodlands. Here is Prästhushamn, a large and well-preserved fishing village and Sågsands bathing area with a lovely sandy beach. You can get here by car ferry, which runs around the clock and is free.
Fälleberget's outdoor area has a mountainous nature consisting of rocky areas alternating with marshes, small lakes and beautiful viewpoints with views of the sea. The outdoor area can be visited in summer and winter.
The water flows down the steep mountainside in Västanåfallet. There is also an exhibition about the Västanå ironworks that existed here in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Mjällån river flows through Mjällådalen. There are several miles of hiking trails with plenty of rest areas to rest at.
Lövudden and Sparrudden, just south of Härnösand, are popular hiking areas. There are barbecue areas and play equipment, and at Sparrudden there is a tower where you can watch birds and perhaps even catch a glimpse of a beaver.
On the outskirts of Härnösand is Sälsten, which during the summer is a sea bath where visitors can choose between a grass or sandy beach. A little to the east along the beach are old boathouses in an old fishing village that is part of the County Museum's collection.
Skarpudden and Barsviken are a popular destination for excursions, with an old chapel and remains from ancient times such as a burial cairn and other stone formations. If you follow the path around Skarpudden, you will see beautiful stretches of coastline with rocky outcrops, beach pebbles and untouched rocky forest.
Härnösand's winter paradise with several different trails and exercise tracks, slalom slope, nature reserve, shelter with barbecue area, a viewing tower, restaurant and café. Vårdkasberget is worth a visit at any time of year.
Behind Västernorrland's museum and open-air museum, an open-air area spreads out with, among other things, scenic forest, burial cairns from the Bronze Age and views of Norra Sundet.
Ådalen III is a tour boat that makes various tours in the High Coast archipelago. The boat departs from Skeppsbron in Härnösand and has catering on board. On the website of Ådalen III you can see current tours and offers.
Härnösand has several fine hiking trails that lead to many beautiful viewpoints, from easy walks to really tough adventures. In winter, you can walk the trails with snowshoes or our winter hiking trails with ordinary shoes.
Nature in Härnösand varies from shallow bays with a rich biodiversity, to shingle fields with clear terraces showing the traces of land uplift. Along the coast, you can see the more bare rocky areas with several hundred-year-old pines, and inland you can experience denser coniferous forest areas.
With high peaks and deep valleys, Härnösand and the High Coast offer breathtaking views. The viewpoints are also excellent destinations for day hikes, with varying degrees of difficulty and accessibility.
In Härnösand, the sea cuts straight through the city center and the water, shipping and boating characterize life and the atmosphere of the place. Here there is time for experiences together, welcome here!
Caves
There are a number of caves in Härnösand that the public can visit, both because they are exciting excursion destinations and because they are geologically interesting. Accessibility in the caves varies, both on the way in but also inside the cave, which in some cases requires good physical fitness and mobility.
