Nybron
Nybron is one of two bridges connecting Härnön to the mainland. The current bridge was inaugurated in 1937 and needs to be replaced by a new one. The construction will last from 2024 to 2026.
The project
Nybron was inaugurated in 1937 and after 85 years of use, the bridge has reached the end of its technical life and needs to be replaced.
The new bridge will be built to cope with at least today's average traffic volume of 16 000 vehicles/day. It will also provide safe passage for vulnerable road users.
Construction started in 2024 and the new bridge is expected to be completed in summer 2026.
During the construction period, traffic will be directed to a temporary bridge alongside the current bridge.
How the new bridge will look
The new bridge is inspired by the original bridge built in the late 19th century. It was a swinging arch bridge with three arches, where the center section is turned 90 degrees at bridge opening to allow boats to pass.
The new bridge will have an arch on the pivoting central section. The arch will be placed between the roadway and the pedestrian and bicycle path to create a clear boundary and increase safety for vulnerable road users. It also creates better views of the water for pedestrians and cyclists.
Along the footpath and cycle path, smaller bulges with seating are proposed.
NB. The images are sketches from a design document that has been produced to guide the design. They are not final drawings.
The area
Nybron is very centrally located and is the gateway to the city center for those coming from the west. Nybrogatan and Nybron are one of Härnösand's most important traffic routes, an artery straight through the city where most of the traffic between Härnön and the mainland passes. Nybrogatan is also the meeting and transfer point for city buses, and all urban lines pass Nybron.
Along the strait that Nybron bridges, there are popular and attractive routes used by many people.
On the island side is Skeppsbron, a quay that leads all the way out to Sälsten's bathing area. Skeppsbron is scheduled to be renovated in 2027-2029.

In the other direction is the square with the residence and the Art Gallery, and further away is Kanaluddens Strandpark with the swimming pool and Hernö Gin Hotel.

On the mainland side, Kronholmen, the Torsvik area lies to the south at Nattviken. To the north is Kronholmskajen with, among other things, the adventure golf course Härnösands Golf och Glass.
The temporary bridge
During the project a temporary is put in place.
