Hiking and biking trail to Högakustenbron
There is a stretch of railway between Härnösand and Högakustenbron that was abandoned when the new Ådalsbanan was built. Now the plan is to convert large parts of the old embankment into a hiking and cycling trail that would connect Härnösand Central with the Höga Kusten trail. The Höga Kusten trail starts today at Hotell Höga Kusten on Hornöberget and goes to Örnsköldsvik.
The project
The project is divided into two phases. The first stage is about creating better opportunities to commute to work by bicycle between Härnösand and Älandsbro.
The second stage will complete the entire route as an attractive recreational route for hiking and leisure cycling, for both local residents along the route and visitors who want to experience the High Coast by bike or on foot starting in Härnösand.
The trail is planned to start from Härnösand Central and first runs along the water on the embankment to the southern part of Älandsbro. It is proposed there to run partly on existing and new pedestrian and cycle paths.
From Älandsbro, the trail continues to follow the old embankment to Utansjö with some exceptions. The exact route needs to be investigated in more detail and also requires a closer dialog with the Swedish Transport Administration and possibly also other stakeholders who will be affected.
The connection to Hornöberget and the Höga Kusten trail needs to be investigated further in dialogue with the Swedish Transport Administration, Kramfors municipality and other important stakeholders who are affected.
The area
The now disused railway line runs through a varied landscape with agricultural land, deciduous forests, coniferous forests, industrial areas, small cottage areas and more cohesive settlements. In the southern part of the area, the land is relatively flat and then becomes more hilly in the northern parts of the area.
2023
Härnösand municipality and the Swedish Transport Administration initiate a dialog about taking over the embankment for the first section, Härnösand - Älandsbro.
2020
A pilot study is carried out by WSP to develop proposals for different solutions and alternatives for how all or part of the disused railway line can be designed and used in the best way if the municipality takes over the facility from the Swedish Transport Administration.
2012
The Härnösand-Veda link is given a new route. Track maintenance on the old route ceases.
1888
A new railway is built between Härnösand and Sollefteå.
