Schools and nurseries
Härnösand has both municipal and independent schools and preschools. Our upper secondary school has nine national programs and another six national programs for apprenticeships.
At the Culture School there are opportunities to learn lots of different instruments or dance, drama and art. Kristinaskolan is a special school for deaf and hard of hearing children with pupils from all over Norrland.

Leisure time
Being close to everything makes leisure time richer. In Härnösand there are activities, leisure facilities and associations for everyone. And if there are none, you can just start a new activity or association. Here it is not only geographically close, but also close between people and short decision-making paths.
Open air areas
Härnösand has many fine outdoor areas with opportunities for many activities and wonderful experiences. The best known and most popular areas are Smitingen, Vårdkasen and Västanåfallet. But there are also many other gems to discover.
Outdoor activities
With World Heritage nature on your doorstep, you can easily live an active outdoor life. Just strap on your skis or whatever you choose and head out. One activity that draws people from far and wide is surfing at Smitingen. Autumn and winter storms create meter-high waves in Smitingen Bay.
Leisure facilities
Härnösand's largest leisure facility is Högslätten, with arenas for most ball sports, curling, athletics, ski and exercise tracks, gym and sauna.
Other major leisure facilities are Härnösand Hästsport Arena, Härnösand's swimming pool facility and Bondsjöhöjdens IP, where there is a roller ski track.
For the youths
Härnösand's leisure center is aimed at young people of secondary and upper secondary school age. There are many activities and sometimes concerts, discos, tournaments and film screenings are organized.
Culture
In Härnösand, we are often told that we have a very rich cultural life considering the size of the municipality. And we are proud of that. We have the Norrdans dance company with dancers from all over the world, one of Sweden's best jazz clubs and one of Sweden's largest film studios. But there's also a broad cultural life where you can pursue your interests.

Communications
Härnösand is just 50 kilometers from Sundsvall and within commuting distance of Timrå, Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik.
By train from Härnösand Central you can easily get both south and north. There are two airports within a few miles.
In Härnösand and Västernorrland County, DinTur organizes public transport. In Härnösand municipality, bus services are subsidized. A monthly pass costs just a few hundred crowns, and children and young people aged 7-19 travel free. With Y-buss you can make longer bus journeys.
